A remarkable visitor has once again reached the shores of Sanibel Island, Florida. The Leatherback sea turtle, the largest living sea turtle species, has returned to the beach to continue an ancient nesting journey that has been repeated for countless generations.
Under the soft glow of the night sky, she slowly makes her way across the sand, carefully chooses a nesting spot, and begins preparing the place where her eggs will develop. Once her work is finished, she quietly heads back toward the ocean, leaving behind a nest hidden beneath the sand.
For weeks, the eggs remain out of sight, with temperature, weather, tides, and surrounding conditions all playing a role in what happens next. Even small disturbances can affect these vulnerable nests.
That is why protecting nesting beaches matters. Bright lights, vehicles, excessive noise, and people getting too close can interfere with this natural process.
