For decades, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan have worked hard to keep their family life away from the intense spotlight of Hollywood. Their four children—Sam, Aquinnah, Schuyler, and Esmé—grew up in a household where fame was never the only story. From an early age, they also witnessed their father navigating the challenges that came with Parkinson’s disease.
Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991, at a time when his acting career was reaching incredible heights. Rather than allowing the diagnosis to define his identity, he continued working, raising his family, and finding ways to remain involved in the lives of his children.
For the Fox family, living with a chronic illness meant experiencing difficult days alongside moments of humor, love, and resilience. Michael has often spoken about how important his family has been throughout his journey. His children grew up seeing that strength does not necessarily mean hiding difficulties—it can also mean facing them honestly while continuing to move forward.
Each of the Fox children eventually developed interests and careers of their own. Sam became involved in creative work, while his siblings pursued their individual educational and professional paths. Despite growing up with a famous father, they have generally maintained lives that are considerably more private than those of many Hollywood families.
The family’s experience with Parkinson’s also became connected to a much larger mission. Through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Michael helped turn his personal experience into an effort dedicated to accelerating research and finding better treatments for Parkinson’s disease.
That mission gave his children another perspective on their father’s journey. They weren’t simply watching a famous actor deal with a serious challenge. They were seeing someone use his public platform to help others facing similar struggles.
Michael’s career eventually changed as his health made acting increasingly difficult. Yet his definition of success has never been limited to movies, television appearances, awards, or fame.
For him, some of life’s most meaningful achievements have been found much closer to home.
His relationship with Tracy and the bond he shares with their children have remained an important part of his story. Through difficult moments and major life changes, the family has continued to stand together.
Behind the Hollywood headlines is ultimately a much more personal story: a father, a family, and decades of learning how to face uncertainty with love, humor, and determination.
