For an entire week, I was certain my career was quietly coming to an end. Every little thing made me suspicious. My files were moved around in accounting, conversations suddenly stopped whenever I walked into the room, and Richard seemed to spend more time than usual talking with his attorney. Then came the strange invitation to meet him at the park.
By Friday, I had convinced myself I was about to be fired. I barely slept, imagining myself carrying a box out of the office and wondering how I would break the news to my mother.
But when Richard and I finally sat together on that park bench, the truth was nothing like what I had expected.
He wasn’t firing me.
He told me he was selling the company and preparing to retire. The new owners had given him an unusual choice: he could recommend someone he trusted to take over his role, or they could choose their own replacement.
Then he told me he had chosen me.
The paperwork, secret meetings, phone calls, and sudden silence had never been signs that I was being pushed out. They were all part of a plan to give me an opportunity I never imagined I would receive.
The job I feared losing was actually the beginning of something much bigger.
